Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Talk About It
This short verse is written to people who love Jesus. John tells us to watch out for anything that takes God’s place in our lives. Idols aren’t always statues—they can be anything we care about more than God, like wanting the most friends, being first, or never wanting to share. God wants our full trust and devotion. If something else is first in our hearts, He asks us to turn back to Him. Idols never really make us happy, but God gives us true joy when we love and trust Him most. Let’s ask God to help us notice anything that takes His place—and show us how to keep Him first.
For Parents to Explain
Dear God, help us see anything that takes Your place in our hearts. We want to love and follow You alone. Amen.
Family Activities
Idol Detector Walk
- Take a walk around your home as “idol detectors.”
- Look for things (or ideas) that get more attention than God—games, TV, sports, or anything else.
- Ask: Are any of these sometimes more important than God?
- Pray together, asking God to help you love Him most of all.
"No Room for Idols" Art
- Draw a big heart on a piece of paper for each person.
- Inside the heart, write or draw just one thing: “God.”
- Around the outside, draw or list things that sometimes try to take God’s place in our hearts.
- Talk about what it means to leave “no room for idols” in your life.
Family Prayer
Let’s pray for God to help us turn away from anything in our lives that could become an idol.
