The Subtle Forms of Modern Idolatry
John writes, “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” Idolatry today rarely involves statues, but often takes the form of subtle enthronements—work, relationships, security, or personal comfort that compete for our deepest loyalty. Scripture teaches that even good gifts become dangerous when placed above God. The pressures and values of the world constantly invite us to find identity, fulfillment, or hope in something other than Jesus. But belonging to God through Christ empowers us to recognize and resist these entanglements.
True freedom and genuine life are found not in the world’s approval or promises, but in surrender to Christ’s lordship. Invite God to show you any “good thing” that is quietly becoming a rival, and submit every area of your life to Jesus anew.
